British Science Week

20 March 2023

Last week at OHS was exciting, as we celebrated British Science Week! Throughout the week, our students had the opportunity to take part in a wide array of activities.

On Monday 13th March, we had a visit from Braintastics who put on a scientific show about memory for our Year 7-10 students. This included demonstrating how small electrical signals from the brain result in movement within the body, and much more.

There were some engaging competitions for students to take part in during the week as well, including designing a poster for British Science Week and designing a lab coat based on the theme ‘It’s alive’.

Our Medicine Conference took place on Wednesday 15th March, which gave insight into various streams of the medical profession, including veterinary science and marine biology. The virtual conference, organised and presented with the help of OHS students, consisted of everything from doctors and professors discussing their field, to medical students discussing how best to prepare for admissions exams. A highlight was Tom Warrender’s Medical Mavericks talk, which introduced our students to the unsung heroes of the NHS, including healthcare scientists. Tom also performed a series of medical tests on himself to demonstrate what each career does.

We topped off British Science Week with a STEM-themed house quiz.
