Anthea Bell Translation Competition 2022

25 May 2022

Last Friday, our Modern Languages Faculty received the wonderful news that three of our students – Emilia (Year 7), Evie (Year 7) and Olivia (Year 12) – have been declared winners in this year’s Anthea Bell Translation Competition, run by The Queen’s College at the University of Oxford.

Inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell, this annual competition aims to promote language learning across the UK and inspire creativity in the classroom.

This year, the organisers received over 3,200 submissions from more than 260 schools, with over 14,000 pupils taking part in total. Entries were judged by a team of undergraduates and professional translators.

We are delighted to announce the following results –

Winner: South East, French, Level 1: Oxford High School: Emilia (Year 7)

Winner: South East, French, Level 4: Oxford High School: Olivia (Year 12)

Winner: South East, Mandarin, Level 1: Oxford High School: Joint entry, Evie and Emilia (Year 7)

Having three area winners is an extraordinary achievement given the number of entries received. The Translation Exchange is hoping to announce all area winners on its website at the beginning of June.

The entries of our students will now be put through to the national competition, the result of which will be announced at the beginning of June. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the national stage of the competition.

Congratulations to Emilia, Evie and Olivia on these fantastic results!
