What is Amnesty International?
Amnesty International is an organisation that helps people restore their human rights. It is a non-governmental organisation which means that they do everything without the support of the government. They mainly thrive on donations, youth groups and campaigns. They help refugees and put pressure on governments to make the right choices; their main aim is to make the world a better, fairer place. They help with political jobs too! They spread awareness and try to educate people on human rights so they can’t be cheated out of their basic requirements.
The Club
Every Tuesday at 12:25, there is Amnesty International Society! It is in Hypatia (ABB) and if you have any ideas on what you would like to cover in Amnesty Club, your opinions are welcome. We do bake sales (for example, the one from April 2023, where we raised over £120), we do other fundraising events, such as the cup game from last year and so much more. We are currently planning an Amnesty International Whole School Assembly, workshop during lunchtime and a nonuniform day. This is because in May, it will be Amnesty International Day. However, when special events aren’t taking place, we do fun and interesting topics based on Amnesty’s guidelines, quizzes, write to the government, sign petitions and try to make a difference. So, please, come along, and learn something new!
What can you do to help?
You can sign petitions on the Amnesty website or you can donate. Helping Amnesty International financially is the most helpful thing, you can even see what happens to your money and you can make special requests for your donation to be used for a certain cause depending on what you are passionate about. You can also buy Amnesty-branded products on their website. This raises money for them but also spreads awareness about them. However, we understand that not everyone can help in such drastic ways, so even if it feels stupid, stand up for what is right.
