Year 8 Visit to the Synagogue

13 November 2024

Written by Stella, Year 8

One sunny November morning we started making our way to the synagogue filled with excitement to learn and see what we have now been studying for two months.

When we arrived we were met with joy and compassion from the workers who were ready to tell us about their culture and religion. We learnt many things – from the reason one celebrates Shabbat, to the reasons why Jewish people eat flatbread during the Holy days. We expanded our already broad knowledge about the synagogue.

The Oxford synagogue has beautiful marks on the door of the Ark which were created by soundwaves of reading the Torah! Mike, our wonderful volunteer, showed us a Torah Scroll that was out of use, and explained that if in a service you want to read two passages, you would have to use two different scrolls. Thank you Oxford Synagogue for helping us in our studies!
