Juniors in Engineering Maths and Science (JEMS)

9 November 2023

Children from St Francis Primary School, New Marston Primary School, Cutteslowe Primary School and St Nicholas’ Primary School took part in this term’s Juniors in Engineering Maths and Science (JEMS) Day on Tuesday 7th November 2024, as part of our long standing science outreach programme within the community.

Students from 8G and 8H worked with the children to conduct science experiments including measuring solutions and calculating volume. Another task encouraged students to create a stable tower using paper sheets, with many rolling them up into cylinders or prisms in clever attempts to strengthen the structures. Part of the morning was spent discussing the environment and what their school can do to protect our planet.

Such experiences provide the children with valuable insights into engineering, science and mathematics, while providing clear vocational pathways. JEMS also gives our pupils the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones as learners and mentors, while learning the value of community outreach.

“Science is for everyone, of all ages – we love science here at Oxford High School, and it’s been great to see the Year 8’s step up and help so many younger pupils learn together.” Mrs Whittington
