We are pleased to share that Kimia in Year 11 has received the ‘Judges Choice’ award for her entry in the Poetry of Science 2023 competition, as part of IF-Oxford: Science and Ideas Festival.
Poets between the ages of 5 and 16 were invited to submit a poem, limerick, haiku, rap or sonnet about science and how important it is in our everyday lives. This years judges included Niall Munro, a Senior Lecturer in American Studies at Oxford Brookes and Claire Hamnett, a physics teacher at Oxford Spires Academy and leader of the Oxfordshire Science Learning Partnership.
They were impressed by Kimia’s poem, ‘Ventilation’, which she read at the celebration event in front of the other finalists and their families. The poem will also be published in a special festival anthology, the Poetry of Science Anthology 2023.
“My inspiration for the poem came from thinking about the science of simple, everyday actions that we don’t really ever think about, such as breathing. This allowed me to expose a simple topic in scientific depth. It was great hearing other poetry at the event and it helped me with my confidence of public speaking.” Kimia P, Year 11
