Over the last two weeks, Oxford High School has taken part in the Big Walk and Wheel, the UK’s largest walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling to school challenge.
This year, the big walk and wheel has seen each House race to track enough miles to reach Expo City in Dubai, the host of COP28 later this year. With an ambitious 4,500 miles to cover, staff and students from each house stepped up to the challenge! We are pleased to announce the results as follows:
1st – Ares
2nd – Athena
3rd – Poseidon
4th – Zeus
By taking part in the challenge, our OHS community has helped improve air quality around the school and accessed the benefits of exercise by choosing to walk or cycle to school. The leader board will stay open for the remainder of this term to see which house can circumnavigate the globe first – only 24,901.461 miles!
“With the OHS Big Walk & Wheel, we hoped to prompt staff and students to think about how they get to school and inspire them, wherever possible, to make this an active journey. Recognising that many people have no choice but to come by car or public transport, and in order to make it more inclusive, we encouraged everybody to try and build some extra exercise into their day, even if it wasn’t to school and back. Whilst this has hopefully been a rewarding experience for all involved, our ultimate goal was to encourage people to think about every journey they make and do their best to reduce their carbon footprint. If this initiative has convinced even just one person to leave the car at home and come by bike or foot to school, then we will be one step closer to reaching Net Zero by 2030.” The Green Committee & Miss McGonigle
As an extra incentive to get more people using their bicycles, before the holidays a bike mechanic was invited into school to teach students and staff how to service their bikes.
