On Monday 20th March, Miss Pallas-Brown and Mrs Gardiner Legge hosted an assembly to celebrate our Year 13 students’ achievements and their service to different areas of school life.

Best All Rounder

The recipient of the Best All Rounder Award in Sport has been a key member of the school football, netball and cricket teams – excelling in all three sports. She is a committed sportsperson who works incredibly hard both individually and for her team.

The Ross Music Award

Named after Holly Ross, a former OHS student, who was not only a fine musician, but also helped greatly within the Music Department.  This is awarded to Isabel L.

The Davies Cup

Named after Janet Davies, former teacher of Music at OHS, and awarded for contributions to the Music Department. This is awarded to Bella M.

The Nye Award for Contribution to School Music

Donated by the parents of Hannah and Louisa Nye, former students at OHS, and loyal supporters of School Music. This is awarded to Naomi W.

Congratulations to our Year 13 students who have achieved their Gold Award in a dedicated Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Assembly earlier this year, and they will be going to Buckingham Palace to receive their awards from HRH Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Other areas of service

You can find Sixth Form students leading on many areas of school life.  We have already celebrated all those students who’ve led on conferences this year.  Here are some of the Year 13 students that teachers wanted to celebrate and acknowledge for their service to clubs and other activities:

Languages

Georgia K and Nadeen K have been ambassadors for languages and have taken every opportunity to promote learning languages.

Nadeen has also taken part in the UK Linguistics Olympiad and received a Bronze Award.

Dorothy Rowe Trust Award

This award commemorates Dorothy Rowe, a keen supporter of Italian language and culture. This award was established in 1996 to enable an exchange between students of Oxford High School and our partner school in Puzzuoli, near Naples. This year’s recipient is India B.

Science

Warnock Extended Research Project

The Warnock Extended Research project gives Sixth-Form students a chance to be ambitious, develop agile thinking and to go beyond in their independent research. This project took its name from Baroness Mary Warnock, former Head at Oxford High School between 1966 and 1972, philosopher and public servant. We want to celebrate the fantastic research projects the Year 13s completed in the course of 2021-2022 and to award and commend those of them who achieved the highest results.

These awards then give us the opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge these pioneering women and to celebrate our Year 13 students’ work too. 

Eileen Power Award

The top three projects focusing on arts, humanities, social sciences or languages, are receiving the Eileen Power Award; named in honour of Eileen Power an OHS alumna, a historian and professor of Economic History at LSE. This year’s recipients are Emma G,  Sophia M and Hebe R.

Highly commended in this category with excellent dissertations and/or artefacts are Katherine L, Amy W,  Lina-Maria M, Charlotte K,  Cherry B, Olivia F, India B, Kitty R, Leda S, Annabel J, Maria A, Shira P, Nadeen K, Tia R, Abi A, Tatiana N,  Anna C, Pandora B and Davita P.

Dame Josephine Barnes Award

The top three STEM-based projects are receiving the Dame Josephine Barnes Award. Dame Josephine Barnes, another OHS alumna, was an obstetrician, gynaecologist and the first female president of the British Medical Association. This year’s recipients are Marianne P, Bella M, Annabelle R and Saachi P.

Highly commended in this category with excellent dissertations and/or artefacts are Claudia B,  Aryanna W,  Belle S, Serena L, Frida C,  Jess J, Anna S, Lottie S, Tess C and Evelyn H.

Combined Eileen Power Award and Dame Josephine Barnes Award

Highly Commended for both the Eileen Power Award and the Josephine Barnes Award for their inter-disciplinary work are Naomi W, Iman M, Muskaan B and Michaela S.

Special Cups and Awards

GDST Travel Scholarships

GDST Travel Scholarships are available each year to enable students in Year 13 to fund travel either as part of their gap year or in the period between school and university. It’s a competitive application process and students need to submit an itinerary, a detailed budget as well as a rationale for their travels. This year Amy W has received a travel scholarship to fund her travel and volunteering in Iceland. 

Green Award for Creative Writing

Named after Jean Green, a former and long-serving Head of English at OHS. The recipient of this award is being recognised for outstanding contributions to creative writing. She has proved herself to be a versatile writer, able to turn her hand to different types of work on the school magazine, and has collaborated effectively on articles. Her originality in her writing, and commitment to and success in creative writing competitions across her school career in school and beyond are impressive. We are very excited to see her name and work in print for years to come. This is awarded to Jessica W. 

The Earley Award

This award was donated by Sarah Earley, a long standing Head of Russian at OHS. To be awarded to an outstanding linguist studying 2 languages including Russian. This is awarded to Lucy T. 

The Lusk Award

To be awarded to a Year 13 student, who has made a positive contribution to school life through her character and personality. Donated by Felicity Lusk, Headmistress of OHS 1997-2010. This year’s recipient has made significant contributions to the school in her leadership of the Ada Benson lectures. This is awarded to Flora M.

The Olivia Jefferies Award

This Award is donated in memory of Olivia Jefferies, a student at OHS from 2004-2011, who tragically died in a car accident. It is awarded for service to younger students of the School. This year’s recipient has been generous in her dedication to younger students in particular in leading Amnesty Club, and most recently in supporting neurodiverse students by sharing her own experience and being a true role model. This is awarded to Claudia B. 

The Carlisle Award

This Award is donated by Judith Carlisle, Head of Oxford High School 2011-2017. It is awarded to a Year 13 student, whose actions consistently embodies the pioneering spirit of Oxford High School. This year’s recipient has been an excellent ambassador for St John’s Ambulance and a champion for volunteering. This is awarded to Annabelle R.

The Benson Memorial Award

As part of Oxford High School’s 140th Anniversary, this Award was established to commemorate Ada Benson, the first Head of Oxford High School from 1875-1879, it is for service to the student body and is awarded to our GDST Student Council Representative. This is awarded to Tia D. 

The Draser Award

For academic excellence and service to the School. Donated by Gertrude Draser, former Head of Modern Languages at OHS. It is awarded to our out-going Chair of the School Council. This is awarded to Jessica W.

The Friends of the Trust Award

This is a very long-standing award and is given for service to the School. This is awarded to Lucy T, former Deputy Head Girl.

The Soulsby Memorial Award (For Service to the School)

To commemorate Lucy Soulsby, the Head of Oxford High School between 1887-1897, we awarded Katherine L, our former Head Girl.
