Poetry Evening

28 January 2023

Written by Esther, Year 12

On Sunday 26th January 2023, we hosted an open mic poetry evening, which included students and teachers reading personal poetry, as well as that of their favourite poets.

In January, I hosted an open mic poetry evening for students in Years 10 to 13, here at OHS. I was really inspired by the Arvon foundation residential I had attended last year, where we spent a week reading and writing poetry and had a group reading session at the end.

This sense of community and ability to celebrate our writing amongst our peers was such a positive experience and was something I aimed to replicate with the poetry evening, thankfully with great success! The event took place in the drama studio, where, over drinks and canapés, students and teachers all read an amazing mix of their own work and that of their favourite poets, ranging from Mary Jean Chan and William Wordsworth, to Oxford High’s very own Elizabeth Jennings.

It was an inspiring evening with an incredible atmosphere. I’m so glad we were able to have as many people participate, especially considering how many of those in attendance read poems they had written themselves. Hopefully, it will be the first of many more to come.
