PE & Sport Update

9 February 2023

This half term, it has been a dark and frosty one for Team PE and Sport, with lots of sporting action being postponed. Nearly all of the PE was brought indoors this half term (much to the delight of the students).

PE

In our PE lessons, Year 7-9 have moved onto swimming – either synchronised swimming, rookie lifeguard or water polo, alongside rugby, fitness or gymnastics. Our Year 10-11 groups continue with their options of netball, football and Zumba, alongside their other lesson, which include a wide range of activities from dance and table tennis to volleyball.

Co-curricular

In the co-curricular world, our plethora of clubs have continued with students enjoying a huge variety of activities such as netball, football, hockey, badminton, trampolining, dance, gymnastics and much more. Despite the frozen conditions, we managed to squeeze in some netball, hockey and badminton fixtures. These have, as always, proved to really enjoyable for students, who share the rewards of competing against opposition schools.

Netball

Our Under 16 Netball team performed superbly at the Regional Finals winning 3 of their 6 group games, with the other games being closely contested. The tournament was an extremely high standard. Our students were a credit to themselves, and Oxford High School, in how they performed on the court and how they behaved off court.

Football

Congratulations to our Under 18 football team, who won their IFSA National Cup match and are now in round 3, away to Millfield. Similarly, our Under 16 football won their EFSA National Cup match, in a closely contested game v Chesham Grammar. The match finished 2-1, and sees them successfully advance into the quarter-finals.

Dance

In the dancing world, we held auditions for the upcoming Dance Show on Friday 10th March 2023. The auditions were excellent and the diversity of dance was a pleasure to see. We now have a great line up for the Dance Show, so save the date and keep an eye out for tickets! Recently, we hosted a dance workshop run by a professional dancer from the James Wilton Dance Company. This was an amazing opportunity for our students, who loved it! We are really enjoying growing dance here at OHS and seeing our students who have a passion for dance come out of the woodwork. So, we can’t wait for the Dance Show already!

Sport and Dance Dinner

In other news, we also have our prestigious Sport and Dance Dinner on Tuesday 21st March. This is another save the date for our sports teams and dancers (Year 9-13), and their parents. It is set to be a great evening with Sport and Dance awards, a three course meal and a talk from our guest speaker, Holly Hunt, Team GB and England Hockey Commonwealth Gold Medallist. Keep an eye out for ticket details!

We now look ahead to hopefully a slightly warmer half term to enable even more PE and Sport to be enjoyed, as it should be. Thank you and well done to all our students who continue to commit so much to the PE department.
