Celebrating International Women’s Day

25 March 2025

Written by Bori, Year 12 & Social Action Prefect

In celebration of International Women’s Day a couple days earlier, Daria, Bianca, Sofia (Year 10), and myself, accompanied by Mrs Sheppard and Mr Rugna, had the wonderful opportunity to visit the local Green Gates Care Home on Monday 10th March. We set off during afternoon break to pop in for a short visit, and received a wonderful welcome from all the residents and staff.

We initially wanted to honour the Italian tradition of gifting mimosa flowers to women on International Women’s Day – this flower’s bright joyful yellow colour is said to symbolise the strength, sensitivity and beauty of women and holds its roots in post World War 2 Italy. However, after an issue with the delivery of these specific flowers, we landed on the slight English improvisation of bringing bright yellow daffodils to the wonderful residents! Even with this slight change of plans we had the most amazing time getting to know some of the wonderful women at Green Gates and sharing this celebration with all of them. We can only hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!

This was such a special moment to connect with our local community of women outside of our own school circle and we look forward to returning to visit the fabulous residents again some time soon! We would also like to thank Mrs Sheppard and Mr Rugna for helping organise this event and for coming along to support us throughout!
