The Politics Department is headed by Mr Mike Gallacher who has been teaching at Oxford High School since 1993. He teaches British, European and US Politics with a keen interest in the politics of the European Union. Mr Rob Packard teaches US Politics, having studied American Politics at university.

Our students study Government and Politics in the Sixth Form and it is a popular option with an average of 15-20 students studying it each year. Students study British Politics in Year 12 looking at where power lies in government and current affairs topics since 1997. In Year 13, they study US Politics and EU Politics, giving them a very broad coverage of differing systems of government and of countries.

We have a regular programme of guest speakers in school and a thriving Politics Society run by the girls. In an election year, all of the General Election candidates for this constituency are invited in our range of visiting speakers has included James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal, Shami Chakrabarti, Director of the pressure group, Liberty and US Congressman Louie Gohmert. Foreign trips will visit a variety of destinations including New York and Washington, where students visit the United Nations, the 9/11 Museum, the Pentagon, the White House, the Capitol Building and the US Supreme Court. They also enrich their studies by visits to Europe including Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Barcelona, Brussels and Strasbourg. Visits to Brussels include the European Commission, the Council of Ministers, the Parliamentarium and in Strasbourg to the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
