PE and Sport Updates

1 April 2022

It has been another busy time for the PE team, having just finished off the House Football events which were a great success across all the year groups.

The Y11s reminisced on all their House events over the years, and played out their last one with more enthusiasm than ever before, whilst the Y7s embarked on their first House Football Competition with glee. Year 8, 9 and 10 also very much enjoyed their events, too. As always, different houses won the House Football in different year groups and the House spirit was second to none! The curriculum has run smoothly with many students excited to be back in the pool this term, after missing it lots during Covid times.

There has also been unprecedented success, with the U18 hockey team clearly inspiring others after making history before half term playing in the National Finals – a first for OHS. The U16 netball team reached the semi-final of the National Cup, after finishing 4th at Regional finals as well. A long trip to Sunderland for them, where they made memories to last a lifetime, and played the most exceptional game of netball. It wasn’t to be, narrowly losing by a few goals, but they too have put OHS on the sporting map. Never before has a netball team made the semi-finals of the Regionals, or made the semi-final of the National Cup.

The U15 football team, spurred on by other successes, had an emphatic victory in Blackpool in the semi-final of the National Cup and are now in the National Cup Final on 26th April – absolutely incredible news and another first for OHS. A term where much history has been made! Thank you and well done to all our students involved in making history for OHS, we are in a much better place for all they have given and done for us.

On the co-curricular front there have been fixtures aplenty in netball, hockey and football, alongside some badminton, gym, biathlon, water polo and swimming, too. Students have competed with enthusiasm and have always done OHS proud. A huge well done to all our students who participate in all our clubs and fixtures.

The GDST Select Cricket Trials have also taken place, where all GDST students can compete for a place in one team, and we have four students who have successfully made it. Four students of thirteen in the team, across 23 GDST schools, are from OHS – incredible! A huge well done to Alice (Y13), Sana (Y11), Ellie (Y11) and Emma (Y10).

We have also had individual successes with Charlotte (Y7) finishing 3rd in the National Biathlon, Emily (Y9) being selected to play squash for England in the upcoming Europeans and Five Nations tournaments, and Cecily (Y10) being selected for a second England Football Squad training camp! We are so proud of those three for dedicating so much time to their training, alongside their studies, to achieve so highly. We wish them the best of luck with all their training and tournaments to come.
