Smashing Success for Oxford High Tennis

We are thrilled to announce that Oxford High School GDST has been awarded Team of the Year at the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Awards, celebrating our exceptional achievements in the 2024–2025 tennis season.

Our success reflects not only the talent and dedication of our students but also the passion and expertise of our PE department. Our teams have shone on national stages, with our Under 18 team, made up of three Year 9s and two Year 10s playing up two age groups, finishing an impressive 12th in the country at the LTA Aberdare National Finals. Meanwhile, our Under 14 team made history by winning the inaugural School Sport Magazine National Tennis Competition, with three of these players also competing in the Under 18 Aberdare Finals.

Our competitive opportunities span all ages and abilities. Oxford High entered multiple LTA Youth Schools competitions across different divisions, as well as the Year 11–13 LTA League in the Autumn term. Beyond national and regional competitions, we provide regular friendly and competitive fixtures for players of all levels, House tennis competitions for Years 7–11, and Play Your Way to Wimbledon Tournaments, which have led two students to compete at Wimbledon itself. Our Year 12 Sports Leaders also enjoy the unique opportunity to attend Wimbledon through the Schools ballot, recognising their outstanding contributions.

Central to our success are our exceptional coaches and PE staff. LTA-accredited coaches Ms Tonks and Ben Coomber deliver extra tennis lessons during PE classes, supporting all students—whether beginners or aspiring national players. Head of Tennis Ms Tonks and Ms Thompson have gone above and beyond, dedicating time and expertise to nurture players from their first years at Oxford High. Alongside Director of PE and Sport Ms McGonigle and the wider PE team, they ensure every student can develop a love for tennis and sport at any level.

This award is a testament to the skill, determination, and teamwork of our students, the commitment of our coaches, and the support of the whole Oxford High community. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this achievement and look forward to continuing our tennis journey, inspiring the next generation of champions.
