We recently welcomed 60 Year 5 pupils from across the county for a JEMS Science morning (Juniors in Engineering, Maths and Science). The JEMS sessions are a key part of our programme of community work.
This time boys and girls from our partner primary schools Cutteslowe, St John Fischer, Cowley St James and St Francis were keen and ready to tackle hands-on interactive science experiments, mentored by our own Year 8 students; the theme was ‘What we eat’.
Organiser and lead teacher Mrs Whittington said “We were delighted to again welcome so many fabulously enthusiastic Year 5 children, from all over Oxfordshire to our school. It’s the tenth year of JEMS, and being able to share our passion for science with the wider community is part of what makes Oxford High so distinctive. Our own students love the chance to work and interact with younger pupils, so everyone benefits. An outstanding education must include going beyond lessons, and sharing Science activities is an ideal way to challenge students of all ages, encouraging them to cooperate together, ask questions and investigate the technical world around them. Sessions like this kick-start their journey while they are young.”
