On Thursday 4th December, the Year 8 Mandarin students visited the Ashmolean Museum to deepen their understanding of ancient Chinese history and artifacts. The trip was thoroughly enjoyable and highly educational. Our group took part in an engaging guided tour that led us through several galleries, where we were able to observe—and in some cases even handle—objects that were centuries old.
One of the main topics we explored was the importance of the Silk Road. We learned how this vast network of trading routes connected distant parts of the ancient world, allowing merchants to exchange goods, skills, and ideas. The guide explained how many items we consider everyday necessities today can trace their origins back to these early exchanges. We also examined the materials commonly used in ancient China, such as jade and lacquer, and discussed why they were so highly valued.
Another fascinating part of the tour was learning about the contrast between ancient Chinese craftsmanship and Western creations. Chinese artisans frequently used bronze to create detailed vessels and tools, and we learned about the techniques they used to imprint intricate patterns onto these pieces.
Later in the visit, we explored one of the lower galleries and came across a beautifully decorated screen adorned with images and ancient Chinese poetry. The level of detail was remarkable, and we spent time studying how the artwork and poetry complemented each other to tell a visual story.
Overall, the trip was an enriching experience that brought our classroom learning to life. Seeing real artifacts and hearing the stories behind them helped us better appreciate the complexity and beauty of ancient Chinese culture. The visit not only expanded our historical knowledge but also encouraged us to think more deeply about how cultural exchange has shaped the world we live in today.
