Amy Isles Freeman – Alumna and Visiting Artist

27 November 2017

OHS alumna Amy Isles Freeman came into school to speak to students about her journey since leaving the school in 2011, artistic practice and her experiences as a freelance artist.

Amy completed an Art Foundation Course at the University of Falmouth and then a BA (Hons) Drawing degree. She has a studio in Cornwall and her work is on sale in Liberty London and at the Mark Product Showroom in Clerkenwell during the London Design Festival. Amy also has a radio show called Woman’s Power on Source FM 96.1.

‘I’ve never been afraid of being decorative. –

After graduating from art school in 2014, I was taught to woodturn on a farm in Cornwall. I wanted to give my work another form to play with, and to bring my use of colour, pattern and drawing into the craft arena. When a skilled practitioner takes on a different medium, I often find the outcomes more interesting than what they originally trained in. Naivety is one of the best starting points.

I want to challenge the extent to which a functional object can be considered art. Expressing myself in an honest and meaningful way is of paramount importance to me, to communicate effectively my thoughts and feelings on the world.’
