Active Citizenship Projects

20 October 2021

This term, as part of their PSHCE programme, our Year 10 students participated in an Active Citizenship Project. The aim was to help them understand what it means to be an active citizen through caring for, and becoming actively involved in, our society, the environment and the wider world.

Students worked in groups to identify and research an issue they believe requires greater awareness, culminating in the creation of a poster showcasing their findings and highlighting their chosen topic.

This year’s posters are currently being displayed in the Crush Hall and have received a lot of attention, from both students and staff alike. There is no doubt that the displays have generated increased awareness around many key societal issues and generated meaningful discussion amongst our student body.

The range of topics covered this year was incredibly wide-ranging and included:

  • Marine pollution
  • Barbie and body image
  • Over-sexualisation of women
  • Honour killing
  • Homelessness
  • Period poverty
  • The issues with sanitary products
  • Texas Heartbeat Act
  • Loneliness in old people
  • Racism and transphobia in the LGBTQ+ community
  • Fast fashion
  • Tackling body image in Disney films
  • Male vs female contraception
  • Childhood obesity
  • Criminalising abortion
  • Minimum wage/cost of living
  • Immigration
  • The pay gap
  • The authority gap
  • Forced confessions
  • Non-binary assumptions

Well done to all of our Year 10s for engaging so wholeheartedly with this aspect of your PSHCE programme and raising awareness around so many vital issues.
