A Greener OHS: Big Walk & Wheel and OxClean Litter Pick

1 April 2022

For the past two weeks, the OHS community has eagerly participated in two ‘green’ events: the Big Walk & Wheel and a litter pick for OxClean.

Organised by the charity Sustrans, the Big Walk and Wheel is a two-week initiative that aims to encourage people to walk, cycle and scoot to school, as well as including wheelchair users and the opportunity to do other types of active journeys. Here at OHS, each form group was encouraged to fill in a record sheet recording their journeys to school, and it has been fantastic to see some students and staff changing their way of travelling to school.

We are pleased to announce the following awards for the Big Walk and Wheel competition. Congratulations to you all!

  • Winner for the greatest number of active journeys (walking, cycling, scooting) to school – 11H
  • Runner-up for the greatest number of active journeys to school – 9G
  • Winner for the most active tutor group – 8 O
  • Runner-up for the most active tutor group – 9O

As an extra incentive to get more people using their bicycles, a bike mechanic was invited in school for two mornings to service the students’ and staffs’ bikes free of charge. This was sponsored by the Sixth Form Germanists who won last academic year’s Oekoropa competition (run by the Goethe Institute) and the school.

Moreover, earlier this week an amazing 106 students and 12 staff took part in the annual OxClean litter pick. The students and staff went around the school grounds and nearby streets to ensure their local area was free of litter and to gain awareness of the benefits of litter picking and being responsible with their own litter. Well done to all volunteers!
