A Day As A Formula One Engineer

14 July 2022

Last week, Allie in Year 10 had the incredible opportunity of attending and observing the setup day operations for the Formula One British Grand Prix at Silverstone, during which she was able witness and even take part in the engineering preparations and tests for the race.

Of the day, Allie commented:

“On the setup day of the British Grand Prix, I had the incredible opportunity to join my dad, Gary Gannon, a race engineer for Haas F1 Team. We were at the circuit for the full day on Thursday as the team worked through its preparations for the event. I attended 4 engineering meetings to start the day. Next, we went on the circuit walk with the driver, Mick Schumacher, to discuss driving and the race weekend plans with him. Activities then moved to the garage where we performed a floor stiffness test using a load cell and laser displacement sensors. Finally, we observed and participated in other activities such as setup checks and pit stop practice. I really enjoyed this work shadowing day with my dad; it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see behind the scenes of a unique engineering environment.”

The Haas F1 Team had a very successful race on Sunday with both cars scoring points for the first time since 2019, in which Allie’s floor test work contributing to this fantastic result!
