Russian is thriving at Oxford High and is one of the leading school Russian departments in the UK with strong examination results and girls reading Russian at Oxford or Cambridge. The department is headed by Mrs Ekaterina Solovyova, a graduate of Moscow State University and the author of many Russian teaching materials.
Teaching and learning is enhanced via multi-media and a wide range of IT to encourage and stretch pupils of all abilities to fulfil their potential in language learning. We provide students with the tools and skills to enable them to become independent and enthusiastic learners. There is a real buzz about the department, which consistently attracts and retains young and aspiring linguists.
Students can choose to do Russian as their additional language in Year 9 and gain plenty of pportunities for interaction in the target language. Pupils are quickly lured into the world of beautiful Cyrillic handwriting, Slavic accent and Russian culture. By the end of the first year the girls can converse freely on a number of basic topics, such as Food, Family, Personal information, Holidays.
At KS4, girls acquire a deeper understanding of grammatical structure and enrich their vocabulary to include issues such as Environment and Media and Entertainment as part of the Edexcel GCSE syllabus. The girls’ conversational skills are developed rapidly through regular sessions with the native speaker. Our popular annual Russian Year 11 offers the opportunity to travel to Russia and stay with a Russian family for 12 days. Some of our “russianists” are offered work experience placements in Russian companies and at the Russian department at BBC.
Russian is a very popular option in the Sixth Form with a wide range of topics to encourage a deeper understanding of the language and a wide spectrum of cultural aspects, including literature and cinema.
Beyond the curriculum, we run theatre and ballet trips, lectures, clubs and events support our students’ enthusiasm and passion for the Russian language, culture, history and literature. Our girls participate in various national Russian language competitions, including Russian Essay Competition winning the top prizes.
