Music is highly valued in our Junior School. Every year group has their own choir and puts on a show each year. There are autumn, Christmas and summer concerts. Girls are invited to join Chamber Choirs, Senior Orchestra and a variety of other instrumental groups. Children regularly perform in assemblies as well as prestigious competitions such as the GDST Young Choir of the Year which involves all the 26 schools in the GDST.
During lessons, girls can use the wide range of musical resources to compose creative pieces both as groups and individuals. Often they record their compositions for later listening and discussion.
In Art, girls at Oxford High Juniors are given a choice of a wide variety of media and equipment both to use and experiment with. Girls across all year groups explore mark making, 3D work and painting. Children are encouraged to learn new techniques across the subject.
All projects are underpinned by contextual studies, both traditional and contemporary. The emphasis is on experimenting with media and images and free expression. The girls may all start at the same point when the project is delivered but are encouraged to take their project down an individual route.
Taught by specialist teachers from the Senior School as well as our experienced Junior and EYFS team, drama and performances on stage are a key part of life at OHS Junior School. The girls develop great confidence and thoroughly enjoy performing in plays, musicals and assemblies – to peers and parents alike.
