The Oxfordshire Classical Association Reading Competition takes place every year at the Faculty of Classics, Oxford University, presided over by four Classics Fellows from the University. This year OHS took 35 girls from Year 9-12 to read Latin and Greek aloud in front of the judges and their peers. To read these ancient languages aloud in public takes a lot of courage, and a huge amount of skill, determination and practice. There are four categories for each language in the Junior and Senior competition: Prose, Verse, Dialogue and the dreaded Memoriter (a passage learnt off by heart). It is a great experience for the girls to compete against other schools and to be able to show off their considerable talents in the classical languages. Our girls did extremely well as always, gaining four First prizes and two Second prizes amongst a very large number of entries. Special mention should be made of Rowan in Year 9 who was the youngest competitor we have ever had in the Junior Latin Memoriter – and she won First prize – huge congratulations!
